TRAC OFF and Check Engine Light on a Toyota RAV4: Causes & Fixes

What it isAn engine fault made the RAV4's computer switch traction (TRAC) and stability (VSC) control off as a fail-safe
SeverityModerate
Safe to drive?Short trips, yes — you lose traction/stability assist, and AWD models lose some grip help. Careful in rain or snow
Typical cost$0 gas cap to ~$300 sensor; more if the converter is at fault

Fix it

  1. Pull the code

Plug an OBD2 scanner into the port under the dash. The stored code names the system at fault — read it first.

  2. Check the gas cap

A loose or cracked cap sets an EVAP code, the cheapest and most common trigger. Re-seat or replace it.

  3. Fix what the code shows

Sensor, coil/plug, EVAP part, or catalytic converter (P0420 is common on the RAV4). Don't replace parts before reading the code.

  4. Clear it

TRAC OFF goes out with the check engine light. If TRAC OFF stays on with no engine code, look at the wheel-speed sensors.

What's going on

On a RAV4, traction control (TRAC) and stability control (VSC) run off the same computer that manages the engine. Store a powertrain code — the fault behind the check engine light — and that computer switches TRAC and VSC off as a fail-safe, lighting TRAC OFF. The traction system itself is usually fine; TRAC OFF is a symptom of whatever set the check engine light. The Toyota TRAC OFF and check engine light overview covers the link in general.

The RAV4’s common triggers are the everyday ones: a loose or cracked gas cap and other EVAP faults (P0455 and friends), a lean code (P0171), and — on higher-mileage RAV4s — catalytic-converter efficiency (P0420). Read the code before replacing anything; a $15 cap and a four-figure converter both land the same two lights on your dash.

What makes the RAV4 worth a word is all-wheel drive. On AWD models the traction system works with Dynamic Torque Control to shuffle grip to the rear wheels, so when a fault forces TRAC OFF you lose that assist until the engine code is fixed and cleared. The hybrid RAV4 adds an electric rear axle (E-Four), but it behaves the same way — a stored powertrain or hybrid-system fault pulls traction assist back and lights TRAC OFF alongside the check engine light.

For the broader code list, see the full Toyota check engine light guide for the RAV4. If the VSC light is on too, the TRAC OFF and VSC light guide explains it, and if the light won’t clear after a repair, see TRAC OFF light that won’t turn off.

FAQ

Why do TRAC OFF and the check engine light come on together on a RAV4?
They share one computer. When the RAV4 stores a powertrain code it disables traction (TRAC) and stability (VSC) control as a precaution, so TRAC OFF lights up next to the check engine light. Fixing the engine code clears both.
Does TRAC OFF affect AWD on a RAV4?
On AWD models the traction system works alongside Dynamic Torque Control, so with TRAC OFF on you lose some of the grip assistance that sends torque to the rear wheels. The AWD hardware is fine — it's switched to a reduced mode until the engine fault is fixed and cleared.
Is it safe to drive my RAV4 like this?
For short, normal trips usually yes — you lose traction and stability assist, so leave more room in the wet. Stop driving hard if the check engine light is flashing, which signals an active misfire.
Is the hybrid RAV4 any different?
The principle is the same. The hybrid's rear axle is electric (E-Four), but a stored powertrain or hybrid-system code still tells the computer to pull back traction assist, so TRAC OFF appears with the check engine light. Read the code to see which system it is.
